Inspired to find my writer’s voice, I am in a quest to search for a novel of a local author. But apart from honing my writing skills, I thought I should also write a review about this book. Gina Apostol’s novel Insurrecto beckoned me to pick it up. In the front cover, the woman in Baro’t […]

The Reliquary

“It has been more than six years… I’m widowed. Since his death, Joy and I have gone through loops and hurdles: forced to work in a Call Center in Lipa, left Joy under the care of Mae, my best friend, and the nightmares—and morning terrors. I started having those terrifying episodes in our house […]

The Woman Who Had Two Navels and Tales of the Tropical Gothic

The Woman Who Had Two Navels and Tales of the Tropical Gothic     By Nick Joaquin   Recently, I was walking inside my favorite bookstore when The Woman Who Had Two Navels and Tales of the Tropical Gothic beckoned me close. Despite the shiny front cover–it didn’t have that premium texture, a woman […]

El Filibusterismo

El Filibusterismo Jose Rizal The memory of the lamp occupied his thoughts. In less than two hours a great catastrophe would take place and when he thought about it, it seemed as if men who passed by him were headless. What’s this lamp Basilio been referring to and what does he meant by “a great catastrophe?”      I’ve had El Filibusterismo for a long time, but it took me a while to finish it. The past few days has been terrible—I’ll spare you of the details; and so, I really have to find away to read this English translation of Harold Augenbraum and to just tell you whether this second book of Jose Rizal is worth reading or not. Despite the front cover that I really didn’t like, as it didn’t have that premium feeling compared to […]

Noli Me Tangere (Touch Me Not) By Jose Rizal

For the novel that I have chosen to review, I had my doubts, as it’s a novel of Jose Rizal. In school, my teacher assigned us to memorize Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere that was written in Tagalog. I, now realized that the undertaking is a challenge if I lack the interest in reading the novel. It worried me more, as the front cover didn’t satisfy me—it’s not attractive, but you’ll probably will think otherwise. After reading the novel, I couldn’t believe the emotion that it stirred in me.

The Mango Bride

It took me a while to open the pages of The Mango Bride and I have had the book for a long time. First, the thing that draw me to pick up the book from the shelf is the yellow cover and the title itself. In contradictory to the saying “Don’t judge the book […]
